Val Bowes Studio

Born in Bromley, Kent in 1957. Went to Art College as a mature student in the early 1980’s. Graduated from Bristol Polytechnic with a B.A. Hons in Fine Art Painting in 1985. Immediately got a studio in Bristol and continued painting and very quickly went on to exhibiting and selling work in a variety of venues in and around Bristol. Studied for an M.A.in Fine Art at Cardiff University in 1990. Work in numerous private collections throughout the U.K., Europe, Greece, Canada, U.S.A., India, Australia and New Zealand.

How I Started
I went back to college to study Fine Art in my mid-twenties after working in a variety of jobs that left me longing for something more fulfilling. I had always been ‘good at art’ as the expression went at school, but was not made aware of the opportunities that existed to train as an artist – my school careers talk amounted to ‘what do you want to be – a nurse or a secretary?’- I tried both but to no avail. When I finally got a place to study as a ‘mature student’- I was 25 by then - I was thrilled and willing to work really hard. As soon as I completed my degree I found a studio and I loved the new-found feeling of freedom to work without the inhibition of having college tutors looking over my shoulder - and I have carried on with my passion for painting ever since.

Why I Do It!
I feel a deep affinity with the artist Henri Matisse who, when asked did he believe in God, said ‘yes, when I’m painting’. The alchemy of paint never ceases to amaze me and to see an image emerge from a combination of marks and colour is a deeply moving experience. I am fascinated by religious iconography and places of worship and find the hallowed objects that people invest faith, hope and love in endlessly fascinating. I paint and draw intuitively, relying on memories, travel and relationships for my inspiration and it is as if the shapes, motifs and colours I see gradually ‘distil’ in my mind and then re-emerge as semi-abstract realisations of my earlier observations and experiences. It is often said that the resulting pieces have an almost visionary quality, glowing with radiant colour and a personal symbolism that people find both spiritual and deeply moving.

Prices
I offer a wide range of prices from £12 for mounted, signed and titled reproductions of some of my originals, up to £5,000 for my largest oil paintings. I also provide the opportunity to buy work by installments. So, if you love something but your budget doesn't allow you to buy it in a single payment, help is at hand. Please feel free to ask and I can easily draw-up a mutually beneficial payment-plan to suit your needs.
