Everyone works with their materials in a different way. I love the unpredictable nature of oil paint and, depending on how I mix it – and with what – it takes on a myriad of new possibilities. Sometimes I like to use a thick varnish such as Coppal Varnish with the paint, sometimes the opposite – and I will just use turpentine with a trace of Linseed Oil. Then there is the ‘ground’ - sometimes I love to paint on a very slippery surface primed with Button Polish – and other times I like to paint on canvas – this has the absolute opposite quality as it's textured and therefore causes the paint to ‘drag’ across the surface. I also find painting on board primed with Gesso rather wonderful – Gesso is a ‘ground’ made from mixing dissolved rabbit-skin ‘size’ with ‘whiting’ – a fine white chalk powder – and each surface dictates a different outcome when the paint is applied. Then there is board simply primed with emulsion paint and that also has its own unique qualities. The range of colours that can be achieved from mixing a few well-chosen pigments together is infinite and there is an alchemy to paint that defies description. I start with a ‘feeling’ for whatever it is I want to paint about – using just a few colours and just experimenting with shapes and lines. I put a lot of paint on – and take a lot off – constantly changing what’s there until it starts to ‘talk’ to me. Sometimes at this point the painting seems to paint itself but if it's not going well I am always willing to destroy what's there - and sometimes at this moment of destruction the imagination is freed and this then allows new ideas to come through.
